About The Ancram Preservation Group

Founded in September 2000, The Ancram Preservation Group is a private not-for-profit 501(c) 3 corporation devoted to “promoting and advocating the architectural, economic, cultural and historic vitality of the Ancram Community through historic preservation, and cultural and educational programming in partnership with other community groups.”  It is the belief of the Board and Members of APG that a significant part of the community’s identity is embodied in its historical structures which serve as a living testament to the shared heritage of this community, and whose sense of  “place” is dependent upon maintaining the physical fabric of its past.

Founded in the early 1740’s as part of Livingston Manor, and home to the Ancram iron forge, which played a significant role in the American Revolution, Ancram owns a critical part of New York State’s history. APG is dedicated to preserving the evidence of that history as a reminder of Ancram’s special place in it. As a volunteer organization, APG depends upon the financial and physical support of concerned members of the community for its endeavors. Projects

APG is currently working with John Stiehle, the owner of the yellow house on the NE corner of Routes 82 and 7, to stabilize the building and remove the crumbling rear addition. The Stiehle house is thought to be one of the oldest domiciles in the town of Ancram, constructed in the first half of the 18th century, and stands as a “gate post” to the entry of the town. Along with Simons General Store and the “Tinsmith” house opposite it, the Stiehle House helps form the center of the Town of Ancram.

- APG continues to pursue a buyer for Simons General Store in the hopes that, as an occupied structure, it will bring new vitality to the Town. The proceeds of any sale will be applied to new preservation projects.

- Through its Local Improvements Grant Project, APG provided paint for  the repainting of the Ancram Opera House and will help fund the repainting of the Ancramdale Prebyterian Church.

- APG is currently assembling a “watch list” of endangered structures and environments that are critical to the Town’s history.
